one evolving design philosophy
Jade House Studio is built on the partnership between creative direction and craftsmanship.
Merryn leads the design vision, drawing on a career in design journalism, travel and storytelling to uncover the unique spirit of a place. Scott brings engineering precision, technical expertise and exceptional craftsmanship, ensuring every idea is realised with integrity and care.
Together, they believe that memorable homes are not imposed upon a landscape - they are discovered through listening, thoughtful design and beautifully executed detail.
Merryn Pyper
Currently inspired by
the idea that every place already knows what it wants to become
Every memorable place begins with an idea.
Merryn is the founder and Creative Director of Jade House Studio, where she leads the design vision behind every project. Her work is guided by a simple belief: the most beautiful homes are not created by imposing a style, but by uncovering the unique spirit of a place.
Before establishing Jade House Studio, Merryn spent decades immersed in the world of architecture, interiors and design including as Housing Editor of Western Australia's leading homes publication. Working alongside many of the State's finest architects, builders, landscape designers and interior designers gave her a rare insight into how exceptional homes are conceived, crafted and ultimately experienced.
Earlier in her career she worked in luxury lifestyle publishing and international travel photojournalism, documenting remarkable homes, gardens and destinations throughout Australia and overseas. Those journeys deepened her understanding that the most enduring places are those where architecture, landscape, craftsmanship and culture exist in quiet harmony.
Those experiences now shape every project undertaken by Jade House Studio.
Merryn approaches each commission by first listening - to the landscape, the history of a property and the lives of the people who will inhabit it. Rather than beginning with trends or predetermined styles, she develops a creative direction that allows every home and garden to evolve naturally, creating places that feel timeless, deeply personal and connected to their surroundings.
Over the past fifteen years, Merryn and Scott have quietly refined that philosophy through six renovations across Western Australia, Tasmania and Victoria while balancing demanding professional careers. Their North Perth home became the first complete expression of those ideas and the foundation upon which Jade House Studio was established.
Today, Merryn brings together design, sourcing, writing, photography and travel as one creative practice. With a particular talent for research and discovery, she sources distinctive materials, finishes, objects and makers - locally and internationally - seeking elements that bring character, authenticity and a sense of story to each project.
Whether developing a landscape-led design, sourcing an unexpected material, documenting a remarkable destination or exploring craftsmanship in another culture, she remains inspired by the same enduring question:
How can thoughtful design create places that people never want to leave?

Scott Pyper
Every great design deserves exceptional craftsmanship.
Scott brings to Jade House Studio a rare combination of engineering precision, technical ingenuity and creative craftsmanship. With a career in shipbuilding, he developed an instinct for solving complex problems and creating structures that are both enduring and beautifully made - skills that now underpin every Jade House Studio project.
Affectionately known as the “timber whisperer”, Scott has an extraordinary ability to understand timber intuitively. Whether restoring original old-growth jarrah or creating bespoke pieces inspired by a home's history, his work is distinguished by its quiet confidence. Every detail is designed to feel as though it has always belonged, respecting the original architecture while allowing it to evolve naturally.
Working alongside Merryn's creative direction, Scott transforms ideas into reality. His technical expertise ensures ambitious concepts are practical, buildable and enduring, while his own creative insight enriches every project. From reimagining spaces and refining construction details to crafting custom timber elements and solving complex design challenges, he is an integral part of the studio's collaborative process.
Over fifteen years and six renovations, Scott and Merryn have developed a shared approach that values thoughtful design, craftsmanship and a deep respect for place. Together they believe the finest homes are created not through excess, but through careful observation, beautifully made details and a commitment to creating spaces that feel authentic, timeless and deeply connected to the people who live in them.
